INTRODUCTION TO FICTION PRODUCTION

Over 10 weeks, students will be taken through an overview of the five phases of the filmmaking process. Students will produce a 3-5 minute short film from start to finish. The course does not require any previous experience with filmmaking. By the end of the course, students will have sufficient knowledge of the moviemaking process to plan and execute their own productions. This is a fun, intense class and students should budget several hours per week to work on your project.

Students will work in teams to create a short documentary during the academic quarter. We will cover the fundamentals of theory, cinematography, and editing. This is a fun, intense class for people with limited or even no experience with cameras and editing technology. Most of your work in this course will be done outside of class, so budget several hours per week to work on your project.

SCREENWRITING

This ten week screenwriting class is designed to demystify the structure, format of the screenwriting medium. The class will focus on three, four and five act structures; character study, dialogue writing and plot point analysis; scene by scene deconstruction, as well as tricks for writers block and story line. Students will be working on their own scripts (either short or feature form); and reading scripts. All genres, including Indie and Hollywood blockbuster, will be examined.

This ten week course will cover the story-telling aspects of post production. Students will learn how to use raw visual materials to create sequences, scenes and moments. The focus of this class will be on the creative aspects of editing and the role of the editor.

This course is designed for those who want a better understanding of sound and how to manipulate audio for film. Using hands-on demonstrations, we will familiarize you with production audio equipment. You will learn about signal flow, how to troubleshoot audio problems, vocabulary and terminology. Other topics will include a basic understanding of mixers, critical listening, sound effects, music editing and dialog. Some classes will be located at a recording studio where you will see the elements of sound mixed and locked to picture.

Feature filmmaking is the most complex, convoluted, expensive, technical, comprehensive art form ever created. The Producer/Director of the independent (or studio) film must have a comprehensive understanding of the entire process, planning, production and most of all the pitfalls of entering into the world of the feature film. This course is designed to give the participant a real world view of the process and tools that will enable them to make educated decisions about their own productions.

THE ART OF FILM BUSINESS

This two day workshop will cover the business of filmmaking by legendary director, Albert Pyun. Mr. Pyun will discuss the production business model and identifying the end user, packaging your project, how to make unknown actors an element in your pictures, financing instruments, tax credits and pre-sales, the importance of key crew and vendor commitments. Mr. Pyun will also cover pitching your project and the all important "hearing the yes in no".
