I am a music video director, who has always gone from the negative straight
to video in the telecine, and I am wondering how printing the film before the
telecine would change the look of the image, in terms of slickness, contrast,
and color?
Actually, the process you have been using is the m
ost common one. One trick you may to consider with printing: it's pretty common to create a high-contrast print from the neg and then transfer to video for television. This may require some experimentation to get a noticeable improvement in contrast range. For color reproduction, another process that seems to work well is finding a third-party organization to tweak the color in your print. There are some companies out there that specialize in this, Cerulean Color being one that comes to mind.
